Unser allererster Eindruck von China - die Grenzgebäude in Erenhot, wo wir 1 1/2 Tage auf unsere endgültige Ein- und Weiterreisegenehmigung warten mußten. Es war riesig, sauber, effizient und ...leer. Was man vom Rest des Landes nun absolut nich behaupten kann. Von hier ging es nach Beijing durch eine Landschaft, die sich ganz langsam von Wüste in typisch chinesisch (man hat ja seine Vorurteile) wandelte

Our first impression of China - the the buildings at the border at Erenhot where we had to wait for 1 1/2 days for the final permission to travel on. The border-post was huge, very clean eficient and..... empty. Something you definitely can't say about the rest of the country. Frome here we rode to Beijing through landscape that changed very slowly from desert to typically Chinese (one does have one's prejudices)

Beijing - eine riesige Metropole aber so gar nicht, wie man sie sich vorgestellt hat. Nach dem obligatorischen Besuch der Großen Mauer verbringen wir hier 3 Nächte und 2 Tage. Nicht wirklich genug Zeit, um auch nur einen Bruchteil zu sehen, aber was wir sehen überrascht uns völlig.

Beijing - a huge metropolis which was everithing but what we expected. After the obligatory visit to the Great Wall we stay here for 3 nights and 2 days. Not really enough to see anything at all but what we see completely surprises us

Die nächste Etappe geht von Beijing nach Pingyao. Es ist faszinierend - Beijing hört einfach auf und wir sind mitten in einer grandiosen Berglandschaft.

Unterwegs beginnt die Tortur - jeden Tag ein anderes Problem. Hier das Zweite: unsere Lichtmaschine hat den Geist aufgegeben und Martina versucht unsere Batterie aufzuladen. Die Landschaft ist allerdings umwerfend und die Menschen sehr freundlich und wo auch immer wir anhalten sorgen wir für Furore - wir werden genauso bestaunt, wie umgekehrt.

The next leg of the trip goes from Beijing to Pingyao. It amazing - Beijing just ends end we are finding ourselves in a most beautiful mountainous region.

But from here also the torture begins - every day a different problem. This here is the second one: our alternator has given up the gost and Martina is trying to charge our batery.

The landscape however is breath taking and the people are very friendly. Wherever we stop we cause quite a commotion and we are being inspected with as much curiosity as the other way round

Unsere Herberge in der historischen Altstadt von Pingyao. Die Stadt mitsamt der Mauer sind sehr schön erhalten und obwohl das Ganze sehr touristisch ist, bekommt man doch einen schönen Einblick in das Leben der Chinesen. Die Kulturrevolution hat dem Volk seinen Sinn für Ästhetik nicht austreiben können

Our Guesthouse in the old and walled part of Pingyao. It is a rather touristy place but you still get quite a good impression of Chinese life. The cultural revolution has definitely not managed to let the people forget their sense of aesthetics

Von Pinyao nach Xi an kommen wir durch den chinesischen Kohlenpot. Die Fahrt ist teilweise eine rechte Tortur und spiegelt insgesamt ein wenig den Gesamteindruck, den China zumindest bei mir hinterlassen hat : Immer dann, wenn ich so richtig die Nase voll hatte und nur noch darauf gewartet habe, endlich durch zu sein kommt dieses Land mit  unglaublichen Überraschungen, Einblicken, Ausbilcken, noch grandioseren Gebirgen und völlig netten Menschen. Geblieben ist der Wunsch nach mehr - aber bitte ohne Tourguide

From Pingyao to Xi an we ride through a very heavily industrialized Area and this part of the trip somehow sums up what China has left me with: Whenever I really have had enough a can't wait to finally get out the country throws some spectaclural surprises at me - be it even grander mountains, views into Chinese lefe that give me a whole new outlook on the country and the way people live here or just some wonderful people.

Whats left is the desire for more of it - just without a tour guide please !
