New Zealand - the North island

Nach ein paar Tagen an denen wir uns etwas eingelebt haben, beschließen wir, zuerst die Nordinsel zu erkunden, in der Hoffnung, dass es dort etwas wärmer wird

After a few days of getting use to the place we decide to head for and explore the Borth Isalnd first and hope it will be a bit warmer there

Stop for two nights in the National Park that was Rivendell in the Lord of the rings - wir haben zwei Nächte in diesem Nationalpark verbracht, Drehort für Rivendell, Heimat der Elfen im Film

mehr ist davon allerdings nicht übrig - that is all that's left of it though

and it does not look like this anymore, in fact you struggle to see it at all - so sieht es jedenfalls nicht mehr aus....

the campsite was really nice but unfortunately it was freezing and wet - der Campingplatz war wirklich schön, aber es war gemein kalt und nass

Erster Stopp an der Westküste - first stop at the west coast

Die werden uns von nun an für immer an NZ erinnern, denn sie wachsen überall - from now in we will always think of NZ when we see the flowers, they grow everywhere

Unser Freund auf dem Campingplatz, er hat sogar mich vom Computer losgeeist - our friend on the campsite, he is champion at getting you off your work and on to petting him

Mount Taranaki, you drive around it for days and it sticks out from all angles - Der Taranaki, er sticht von allen Seiten heraus, wir haben zwei Tage gebraucht, bis wir ihn nicht mehr sehen konnten

Viel flaches Land gibt es hier nicht, aber jede Menge tolle Aussichten - there is not a lot of flat country here and an awful lot of views

An der Westküste hat uns der pechschwarze Sand am meisten fasziniert - on the west coast we love most of all the very black beaches

abseits der Highways auf Schotterstraßen ist es am schönsten - the gravel roads away from the highways are most beautiful

there are lots of waterfalls too - Wasserfälle gibt es an jeder Ecke

es wird diskutiert, ob die Landesfahne geändert werden soll, also ist nicht nur der Kiwi vom Aussterben bedroht - they are discussing to change the flag, so it might not just be the Kiwi which is threatened with extinction

Westlich von Auckland versuchen wir auf Schotterwegen an der großen Stadt vorbei zu kommen. Leider sind die Nationalparks zu nass zum campen und irgendwann geht es auch nicht mehr weiter. Also mussten wir dann doch zurückfahren und mitten durch Auckland unseren Weg nach Norden finden

Nice little statue in one of the national parks west of Auckland. We tried all day to either find a place to stop but it was just too wet everywhere or to get past the big city, which did not work either so we had to go back and through Auckland in the end

Auckland in passing by - Auckland, mehr haben wir davon nicht gesehen

Die Coromandel Halbinsel liegt gegenüber von Auckland und ist somit beliebter Wochenendspielplatz für die große Stadt, allerdings zurecht - es gibt wundervolle Strände, 1a Angelmöglichkeiten und jede Menge Nationalparks mit superschöner Natur. Nach dem Wochenende haben wir fast alles für uns und die paar Backpacker, die um diesee Jahreszeit hier unterwegs sind

The Coromandel Peninsula is right opposite Auckland and therefore weekend playground for the big city - quite justly so - there are beautiful beaches, bountyful fishing grounds and at least half of it is nature reserve. After the weekend us and a hand full of hardy backpackers have it almost to ourselves.

and as another treat the geysirs started blowing for us - und als Abschiedsgeschenk konnten wir dann noch die Geysire in Aktion sehen

Von Rotorua aus nahmen wir den Regenwaldhighway in Richtung Ostküste. Die Strecke war fast komplett Schotterpiste durchs Gebirge mit Wahnsinnsaussichten, so dass wir für eine Fahrt von normalerweise etwas 4 Stunden einen ganzen Tag brauchten. Es war frostig in der Nacht, aber angenehm am Tag (ich hatte hier wirklich Probleme mit der Auswahl der Bilder

From Rotorua we took the Rainforest Highway to the east coast. It was almost all gravel road through the mountains with stunning views, so a drive of about 4 hours took us a whole day. It was freezing at night but blue skies and sunshine in the day - just lovely (we had real problems to choose just a few pictures here)

the weather had closed down and the place was rather comercialized, Kev was dissapointed - das Wetter war schlecht, der See kommerziell bis ins Letzte ausgebeutet und Kev war endtäuscht

we did not see much of Tongarino NP either - vom Tongarino Nationalpark und seinen 3 Vulkanen sahen wir auch nicht viel

there is an anual gumboot throwing competition held here - hier wird jedes Jahr eine Gummistiefelweitwurfmeisterschaft abgehalten

From Taupo we went down through the middle of the north island with quite some more very beautiful scenerie

von Taupo aus fuhren wir durch die Berge in Zentrum der Nordinsel zurück nach Wellington

the old St. Pauls cathedral is built inside and out from local timber - die alte St. Paul's Kathedrale is innen und außen komplett aus einheimischen Hölzern gebaut

John Britten designed world famous speed record setting motorbikes, one of which is in Te Papa museum - John Britten entwickelte Rennmotorräder, die Geschwindigkeitsrekorde setzten. Eines davon ist in Te Papa, dem Landesmuseum zu sehen
